Coming after the infamous “sexting” scandal that brought down his promising political career in the summer of 2011, Weiner follows disgraced New York City Democrat Anthony Weiner as he seeks redemption in a familiar place: electoral politics. Weiner joins its namesake as he launches his 2013 New York mayoral campaign, one in which the self-described champion of the middle-class must navigate the challenges of a badly damaged public reputation and a marriage (to Hillary Clinton right-hand woman Huma Abedin) that came perilously close to ending two years earlier. As this all-access, behind-the-scenes documentary progresses, we see the candidate emerge as the poll-leader in a heavily contested New York primary—before a fresh round of scandal threatens to sink his campaign. Kriegman and Steinberg’s deeply captivating piece of political theater (not to mention portrait of human folly) earned the best documentary prize at this past year’s Sundance Film Festival.
