Shot in a single take on the streets of Berlin, between 4:30 and 7 on the morning of April 27, 2014, Victoria tells the story of a Spanish café worker, Victoria (Laia Costa), who crosses paths with a group of young Berliners outside a city discotheque. Not having to be at work for a couple of hours, Victoria explores the surrounding neighborhood with the fun-loving crew, including the charismatic Sonne (Frederick Lau), with whom she develops a fast romantic rapport. However, as late night becomes early morning, the plans of the recently incarcerated Boxer (Franz Rogowski) will come to tragically impact those of Victoria, Sonne, and the rest of the group. Covering an astonishing 22 locations—despite, once again, not featuring a single cut for its entire 140-minute duration—no 2015 film travels further than Victoria, as it moves from setting to setting and from hang-out flick to light romance to crime thriller to, finally, melodrama. Sebastian Schipper’s Victoria was one of the biggest hits at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, before going on to win an incredible six German Film Awards, including Best Feature, Best Actor (Lau), and Best Actress (Costa).
