Jordan’s first-ever nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category, Theeb tells the powerful story of one adolescent boy’s survival in the most treacherous of conditions. The year is 1916, and the Ottoman Empire is in the throes of war. Theeb (or “Wolf”) lives with his older brother, Hussein, in a traditional Bedouin community in a remote corner of the Arabian desert. When a British Army officer and his companion arrive at their camp, Hussein is hired on as their guide. However, unknown to Hussein, Theeb secretly follows the travelers as they begin their journey deep into a land filled with Ottoman mercenaries, Arab revolutionaries, and Bedouin outcasts. Directed by Naji Abu Nowar, Theeb skillfully adopts the boy’s perspective as he is forced to live up to the name given to him by his dead father.
