Awarded the Grand Prix at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Italian writer-director Alice Rohrwacher’s (Corpo Celeste) entrancing, richly observed sophomore feature centers on a family of beekeepers living in isolation in rural Tuscany. Almost at once, a troubled teenage farmhand and kitschy, Etruscan-themed reality program—hosted by the glamorous Milly Catena (Spectre “Bond girl” Monica Bellucci)—arrive in their remote corner of Italy, upsetting the balance within the film’s closely-knit family. Sheltered oldest daughter Gelsomina (Maria Alexandra Lungu) will be impacted most profoundly in Rohrwacher’s widely acclaimed portrait of adolescent uncertainty and awe. Drawing comparisons to The Tree of Wooden Clogs and the films of Federico Fellini, The Wonders hovers magically between dream and reality.
