Awarded the top prize (Golden Lion) at the 2016 Venice Film Festival, The Woman Who Left is the latest epic-length opus from contemporary Philippine master Lav Diaz (Norte, the End of History). After thirty years in prison for a crime she did not commit, Horacia is released only to learn that her husband is deceased and her son is missing. Finding that little has changed during her thirty years incarcerated, Horacia sets out to exact revenge on the very wealthy man whom she has discovered framed her many years before. Shot in luminous black-and-white and staged in the extraordinary long-take setups that have become the director’s stylistic hallmark, this Tolstoy-inspired work of Modernist art cinema possesses all the density and incidental detail of its towering literary predecessor.
