Beth Harrington’s musical documentary, The Winding Stream, tells the compelling true story of the Original Carter Family, one of the most important forces behind country music’s initial popularization in the 1920s. The Winding Stream explores the roots, early years, and troubled later period of this famed musical dynasty, originally comprised of A.P., his wife Sara, and sister-in-law Maybelle. This South by Southwest documentary also introduces viewers to the outlaw phenomenon of “border radio,” which helped spread hillbilly music across North America—and brought it to the notice of a young Johnny Cash. Punctuated by performances by Cash and June Carter Cash, George Jones, Sheryl Crow, and Kris Kristofferson, The Winding Stream is a must-see for any lover of musical Americana.
