Winner of the Best Actor and Best Screenplay awards at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman recently received 2017 Golden Globe and Academy Award® nominations for Best Foreign Language Film. The film follows Emad and Rana, a happily married couple who are mounting a production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. When damage to their apartment building forces them to seek new accommodations, a shocking turn of events leads both husband and wife to reevaluate the state of their marriage and their place in the world. Like Farhadi’s previous masterworks, A Separation and The Past, The Salesman combines a rigorous eye for form and space with a flawless ear for powerfully resonant domestic drama. Drawing subtle and unexpected connections between Miller’s play and the lives of his characters, Farhadi interrogates the fraught relationship between public and private life in contemporary Iran, and the devastating toll of social repression on families and individuals.
