Described by David Ehrlich of Little White Lies as “a beautifully breathless revisionist Western,” Daniel Barber’s The Keeping Room is that true rarity in the genre: The Toronto International Film Festival standout is fronted not by a male character, but by a trio of actresses. It’s the South, 1865, and the Civil War is coming to a close—if it isn’t already over. Three women live alone on an isolated farmstead. When young, head-of-the-household Augusta (Brit Marling) is forced to visit a local saloon keeper in search of a remedy for her ailing younger sister, Louise (Hailee Steinfeld), a chance meeting with renegade soldiers puts all their lives at risk. Unabashedly feminist in its gender politics, The Keeping Room is based on Julia Hart’s revered 2012 Black List screenplay.
