High in the Hollywood Hills, Will (Logan Marshall-Green, Prometheus) and his new girlfriend attend a dinner party at his ex-wife Eden’s (Tammy Blanchard) beautiful—and secluded—home. As we soon discover, Eden and Will have a traumatic recent history that will color the evening from the start. However, as the night unfolds with a group of their closest friends, and two mysterious strangers, Eden and her new husband David’s (Michiel Huisman, Game of Thrones) cryptic behavior leads Will to question the couple’s motivations. With The Invitation, director Karyn Kusama (Girlfight) has crafted a tense and atmospheric thriller that ultimately hinges on Will’s deeply skeptical observations of his fellow party-goers. This is a film that tells us how we should be watching it—and then deftly plays with our expectations.
