Ryder (Logan Miller) is a self-assured California teen who is headed to a family reunion in Nebraska. When he states his intention of coming out to his more conservative extended family, Ryder’s generally supportive mother (Robin Weigert) asks that he not. Though Ryder accedes to her wishes, he does show up in sharp, yellow-rimmed glasses and extremely short shorts. When his nine-year-old cousin Molly suffers an accident while alone with Ryder in the barn, the young outsider arouses the suspicions of his bullying uncle (Josh Hamilton). Skillfully directed by first-time feature filmmaker Matt Sobel, Take Me to the River stands out for its low-key suspense and its strong, Middle-American sense of place.
