In his first Technicolor feature, John Wayne stars as Young Matt Matthews, a tormented Missouri moonshiner who seeks retribution for the death of his abandoned mother.  Seeking to positively inspire Matt are Sammy Lane (Betty Field), a beautiful, blue-eyed Ozark girl, and Daniel Howitt (Western legend Harry Carey), a Christ-like stranger whose presence coincides with miraculous occurrences.  The first of six collaborations between Wayne and Henry Hathaway (Niagara), an accomplished, if underappreciated visual storyteller who was particularly adept at working in color, the pictorially and thematically rich Shepherd of the Hills captures Harold Bell Wright’s bestseller in warm, earthy tones.
