A cynical WWI fighter pilot turned bounty hunter, Marco foils air-pirates and longs to reclaim the heart of his torch singing, ex-flame, Gina.  Along the way he butts heads with Curtis, a hot shot American flying-ace who becomes his chief romantic and professional rival, and joins forces with Fio, a spunky and talented young designer who overhauls his iconic red seaplane. But for the fact that a mysterious curse has replaced Marco’s head with that of a pig, earning him his titular nickname, this thrilling romantic adventure would not be out of place on a double-bill with Casablanca (1942) or Only Angels Have Wings (1939). One of the purest cinematic expressions of Hayao Miyazaki’s enduring fascination with aviation history, Porco Rosso, produced in cooperation with Japan Airlines, is distinguished by its rich, historically accurate depictions of aircraft design and mechanics. But perhaps best of all are the aerial set-pieces; with their beautifully rendered skies and vertiginous sense of scale, they brilliantly capture the exhilarating sensation of flight.
