“Matisse in His Time” Members’ Preview Special Screening in 35mm
Friday, June 17 | 8 pm only
The universally acclaimed third film of French New Wave master Eric Rohmer’s “Comedies and Proverbs” series, Pauline at the Beach tells the story of two cousins on summer holiday in Brittany: Pauline (Amanda Langlet), a charming and bashful teenager with little romantic experience; and Marion (Arielle Dombasle), her bombshell older cousin who clings to the hope that she will fall in love at first sight. Both Marion and Pauline prove irresistible to a series of suitors in this work filled with eloquent exchanges on the nature of romantic love, as well as comic misunderstandings that push the heroines to the brink of unhappiness. For Pauline at the Beach’s look, Rohmer took his cue from Henri Matisse’s The Romanian Blouse—which hangs over one of the characters’ beds—building a color palette of reds, blues, and whites that is maintained throughout.
