Directed by Isao Takahata (The Tale of the Princess Kaguya) and produced by Hayao Miyazaki, Only Yesterday tells the story of a single, twenty-seven-year-old Tokyoite named Taeko who embarks on a life changing trip to the countryside. The film moves back and forth between the 1960s and the 1980s as Taeko reflects wistfully on her childhood dreams, memories, and desires, while seeking a more authentic and fulfilling life in the present. Combining exquisitely detailed line work with a delicately expressive watercolor palette, Takahata infuses both the urban and rural settings with a shimmering aura of nostalgia and romantic possibility. Originally released in 1991, Only Yesterday is receiving its long-awaited North American premiere in a new, English-language version that features engaging vocal performances by Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) and Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Taeko.
