As summer begins in a small Turkish village, five teen and preteen sisters innocently play and flirt with their male classmates as they return home from school. When word of the afternoon and their supposedly “obscene behavior” reaches their grandmother and uncle, the girls are stripped of their former freedoms. Concerned for their moral welfare, and obsessed with the girls’ virginity, their caregivers transform the family home into a prison and “wife factory,” which above all seeks to arrange marriages for each of the adolescent daughters. A stinging allegory for the closing of Muslim society, this Turkish-language Virgin Suicides is the debut directorial feature by female filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven. It is also France’s official selection for the best foreign language category at the 2016 Academy Awards®, despite its language and Anatolian setting.
