After her teenage son is killed in a hit-and-run accident, grieving mother Diane (Emmanuelle Devos) devotes her life to tracking down the couple whose distinctive mocha-colored car was spotted at the scene. Quietly insinuating herself into the lives of Marlène (Nathalie Baye), the owner of a cosmetics shop, and her fitness-instructor lover Michel, Diane carefully weighs her competing desires for understanding and justice as she ponders her next move. An icy, deliberate thriller set against the serenely beautiful coastal backdrops of Lausanne, Switzerland and Evian, France, the film deftly balances Hitchcockian suspense, emotional nuance, and regional specificity. Grounded in the complex relationship between enigmatic, watchful Diane and intuitive, charismatic Marlène, Moka is a stunning showcase for Baye and Devos, two of France’s most celebrated actresses, who give riveting, fully realized performances in the lead roles.
