Hitchcock/Truffaut on 35mm

Adapted from Rear Window author Cornell Woolrich’s Waltz into Darkness, Mississippi Mermaid stars Jean-Paul Belmondo (Breathless) as Louis, a lonely tobacco planter on Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. When Louis sends for Julie, a woman he’s met through the French personals, the person who arrives doesn’t match her photo. Rather it is the stunning Catherine Deneuve (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg), whom Louis quickly marries and entrusts with access to his substantial bank accounts. When Julie’s sister contacts Louis demanding to know her sister’s whereabouts, François Truffaut’s cult romantic thriller shifts settings to the South of France, where the mystery of Deneuve’s true identity intensifies.
