Ashes to Ashes: David Bowie In Memoriam
Thursday, March 10 | 5:30 & 8:30 pm
No more conventional in his choice of movie projects than he was in his groundbreaking musical career, David Bowie teamed with Nagisa Oshima for Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, a Japanese director best known for his radical and heterodox “New Wave” filmmaking and for the explicit In the Realm of the Senses. Co-written by Paul Mayersberg, author of The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence stars Bowie as Major Jack Celliers, a tormented and rebellious military officer who is imprisoned in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. The enigmatic Celliers will come to fascinate and entice his captors, especially Captain Yonoi (Japanese rock star Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also composed the film’s hypnotic score). Beat Takashi (Hana-bi, Zatōichi) co-stars in this bizarre and involving parable of inter-cultural understanding and forgiveness set in the midst of the Second World War.
