Originally from Lyon, France, one of the gastronomic capitals of the world, Georges Perrier opened Le Bec Fin in Philadelphia in 1970. Amid the culinary excesses of the next few decades, the exceedingly opulent Le Bec Fin came to be regarded as one of the best fine-dining establishments in the nation, and Chef Georges one of the world’s greatest sauciers (as he is eager to point out). By the early 21st century, however, Chef Georges’s empire is beginning to show its age—unlike the charismatic and funny sixty-something Perrier, who continues to work twenty-hour days, despite having the incredibly talented Nicholas Elmi (2014 Top Chef winner) as his new chef. King Georges is a poignant “lion-in-winter” story that features on-camera interviews with many of America’s greatest culinary figures.
