After learning of the death of his absent physician father Jean, 33-year-old Parisian businessman Matthieu (Pierre Deladonchamps, Stranger By the Lake) travels to Montreal to attend his funeral and meet Sam and Ben, the two half-brothers he never knew. Arriving in Canada, Matthieu is disillusioned to discover that his brothers are angry, dysfunctional, and completely unaware of his existence. Craving a sense of familial connection, and seeking answers about his father’s life and his own place in the world, Matthieu grows increasingly close to Jean’s oldest friend, Pierre, and his warm, welcoming family. An engaging, naturalistic father-son drama that makes the most of its bucolic Québécois setting, A Kid offers a touching, finely observed consideration of identity, inheritance, and what it means to belong.
