The cat video finds its highest artistic expression in this graceful, heartwarming documentary about the hundreds of street cats that have become a cultural symbol of the diverse, vibrant city of Istanbul. Neither pets nor strays, these animals move freely through the city, quietly and persistently inserting themselves into lives and affections of its residents. From waterfront fish markets to downtown shops and restaurants, director Ceyda Torun’s agile moving camera follows seven charismatic felines over the rooftops and through the narrow streets of her hometown, while their human companions describe each cat’s personality quirks and daring exploits with sheepish pride. Set to an infectious soundtrack of Turkish pop songs, Kedi is a charming celebration of all things feline, and an unexpectedly poignant meditation on the solace, inspiration, and joy that derives from human-animal friendship.
