Regarded as one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century, pop-art icon David Hockney is most associated with his bright, acrylic depictions of Southern California swimming pools and Beverly Hills housewives. In Hockney, filmmaker Randall Wright introduces us to the ingratiating and good-humored, if at times troubled, man behind the work. Consisting of frank interviews with the artist’s closest friends and never-before-seen home movie footage, Wright’s original documentary reveals Hockney to be both an outwardly confident “out” artist, and also someone who has long struggled with his romantic relationships—and who experienced the loss of most of his social circle as a result of the AIDS tragedy. Hockney, however, proves to be an ultimately uplifting experience thanks to Hockney’s optimism and sense of adventure that remains unabated as he approaches his eightieth year.
