In June 1962, thirty-year-old French New Wave filmmaker and critic François Truffaut (Jules and Jim) wrote Alfred Hitchcock, proposing a lengthy interview. “The Master of Suspense” agreed, despite rarely granting interviews. Later that year, the two spent six days sequestered in Hitchcock’s Universal Studios office. Their conversations were captured in audio recordings that provided the basis for Truffaut’s legendary book on the director. American critic and film historian Kent Jones also makes use of these extraordinary archival documents in the invaluable Hitchcock/Truffaut, which premiered this past summer at the Cannes Film Festival. Featuring on-camera interviews with many of today’s leading directors, including Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Olivier Assayas, Richard Linklater, and more, Hitchcock/Truffaut pays homage to both the ideas and creativity of one of the screen’s greatest masters, and also a written text that helped to inspire countless filmmaking careers.
