Based on J. G. Ballard’s (Crash) cult 1975 novel of the same name, High-Rise stars Tom Hiddleston (Crimson Peak, Thor) as Dr. Robert Laing, the newest resident in a towering, high-tech London skyscraper. Laing lives in a luxurious apartment on one of the upper floors—a position that befits his place in high society. He quickly ingratiates himself with Mr. Royal (Jeremy Irons, Dead Ringers), the mercurial designer of the tower block, and also finds himself romantically involved with his sexy upstairs neighbor, Charlotte (Sienna Miller, American Sniper). While Laing manages equally to forge bonds with tenants of the lower floors—including a wild documentarian and his pregnant wife Helen (Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men)—this latter contingent increasingly finds itself alienated from the building’s upper-floor residents. Resentments soon give way to violence, as the concrete edifice becomes the site of an all-out class war. “An apocalyptic romp” that is “rollicking, nasty fun,” in the words of The New York Times’s Manohla Dargis, High-Rise is barbed class allegory situated within an alternative, science-fiction 1970s.
