In 2016, the Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch, Netherlands, celebrated the five-hundredth anniversary of the death of artist Hieronymus Bosch, the city’s most famous resident, with a major exhibition. Hieronymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil goes deep behind the scenes as the museum’s curatorial staff travels to a number of major art institutions, including the Prado in Madrid, Spain, as they research their mercurial subject—who was obsessed perennially by hell and the Devil—in preparation for their ground-breaking exhibition. With Hieronymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil, we re-discover a master whose detail-rich panels provide a wealth of provocative meaning, even as other secrets lie beneath the surface, waiting to be exhumed using the latest in infrared technology.
