Recipient of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival, Félicité follows the title character—who works as a singer in a local bar—as she scrambles to raise money after her teenage son is severely injured in a motorcycle accident. Struggling to ensure her son’s future and come to terms with her own mounting despair, Félicité seeks refuge in a tentative relationship with jovial repairman, Tabu. Adopting a vibrant journalistic style, Gomis offers a mesmerizing snapshot of contemporary life in Congo’s capital city, Kinshasa, while also painting a complex, lyrical portrait of one woman’s search for fleeting moments of happiness in the midst of tragedy. Featuring a thoughtfully curated soundtrack of Congolese pop and European classical music that lends its slender neorealist narrative an unexpected air of operatic grandeur, Félicité is Senegal’s submission for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
