With Fargo the Coen Brothers returned to their home state of Minnesota, producing one of their most influential, personal, and critically acclaimed films. Fargo earned two Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay and the Best Director Award at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival. Based on a true story, the narrative centers on Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand), a pregnant deputy sheriff whose investigation into a kidnapping gone awry takes a surreal and violent turn. Turning a detached, painterly eye toward the stark, northern landscape—which is beautifully rendered in this new 35mm print—the Coen Brothers and long-time cinematographer Roger Deakins transform the true crime procedural into a wry morality tale that pits Marge’s stalwart decency against a chaotic web of greed and savagery.
