It’s 1961, and the trial of Adolf Eichmann, one of the chief organizers of the Holocaust, is being broadcast across America. Meanwhile, at Yale University, Professor Stanley Milgram (Peter Sarsgaard, in one of his better performances) has just devised a study to explore mankind’s ability and willingness to comply with authority. In his experiment, an unwitting subject is asked to administer an electroshock each time an affable stranger (played by Jim Gaffigan) provides the incorrect answer to a question. Despite his pleas for mercy, most of the test subjects voluntarily inflict what they are led to believe are near fatal dosages. Co-starring Winona Ryder as Sasha, Milgram’s devoted wife, Michael Almereyda’s Experimenter is a conceptual, daring, psychological portrait, and dark comedy, the likes of which, in the words of Film Comment’s Amy Taubin, “Kubrick might have envied.” Experimenter will receive its U.S. premiere at the prestigious New York Film Festival.
