Winner of the top-prize, Palme d’Or, at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, Dheepan tells the story of Tamil soldier Dheepan (Antonythasan Jesuthasan) and young refugee Yalini (Kalieaswari Srinivasan) who pose as husband and wife in order to escape their war-ravaged homeland. With an orphaned adolescent also joining the couple as their “daughter,” the film’s makeshift family relocates to the mean streets of Paris—only to find themselves enmeshed in a new brand of urban violence. The latest from Jacques Audiard, the acclaimed director of A Prophet, Dheepan provides both a powerfully humanistic family portrait and also a revealing glimpse into the contemporary immigrant experience.
