An illuminating biographical sketch of one the most acclaimed and influential American filmmakers, David Lynch: The Art Life begins at the beginning. At work in his Hollywood Hills studio, Lynch (Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive) narrates a series of meaningful episodes from his idyllic early childhood in Idaho, his troubled adolescence in Virginia, and his fraught but artistically fruitful years as a student in Philadelphia. Surreal, enigmatic, and richly imagistic, Lynch’s stories are united by recurring motifs of light and darkness, and by his restless pursuit of a life devoted to coffee, cigarettes, and art. Thoughtfully illustrated with archival photographs, home movies, and images drawn from his prolific career as a painter and photographer, David Lynch: The Art Life provides a fascinating glimpse into the origin and evolution of a great 20th century artist, and the sources of some of cinema’s most indelible images.
