Based loosely on legendary Okie Woody Guthrie’s partially fictionalized autobiography, Bound for Glory, Hal Ashby’s double Oscar-winner of the same name ups the fictional ante, creating a new set of characters and events to tell the story of the folk icon. However, for all the liberties that Ashby’s film takes on the level of the story, Bound for Glory brings the Dust Bowl background and musical authenticity—showcasing such famed Guthrie folk and country numbers as “This Land is Your Land” and “Oklahoma Hills.” Starring David Carradine of Kung Fu fame as the struggle singer, Bound for Glory won the actor a National Board of Review prize, along with Academy Awards for Best Music and Best Cinematography—with Haskell Wexler pioneering the use of a Steadicam for his showstopping depiction of a Depression migrant camp. Museum Films is proud to present this Oklahoma Dust Bowl-themed classic on 35mm film.
