Move over, Mark Landis. Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery explores the life and times of Wolfgang Beltracchi, a witty and charismatic German art forger and artist who fooled the international art world with his incredible fakes for more than forty years. However, unlike Landis (a centerpiece of the Museum’s spring 2015 Intent to Deceive: Fakes and Forgeries in the Art World exhibition), Wolfgang and his wife Helene profited greatly off Wolfgang’s ability to forge artists like Max Ernst, Fernand Léger, and André Derain with exceptional ease. Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery invites the viewer into their amoral world: We see Beltracchi at work, we witness the couple’s final days of freedom, and we are invited into their new lives as wards of the (fascinatingly lax) German prison system.
