Hovering appealingly between fiction and documentary, Michał Marczak’s All These Sleepless Nights—which won the director’s prize for International Documentary at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival—follows two charismatic Warsaw art school classmates, Krzysztof and Michal, as they drift from party to after party in the endless pursuit of romance and sensation. Moving in together after the break-up of Michal’s long-term relationship, the two friends find their bond tested by an ambiguous love-triangle with the alluring, capricious Eva. Vacillating between euphoric techno-backed rave set pieces and fleeting moments of morning-after introspection, Marczak’s graceful steady-cam captures memorable, dreamlike images that feel both artfully composed and refreshingly spontaneous. Casually invoking the formal freedom and serious romanticism of the French New Wave, All These Sleepless Nights forges a monument to the high-stakes aimlessness of youth.
