A Ballerina’s Tale tells the uplifting story of dancer Misty Copeland, who only recently became the first African American woman to be named principal dancer of the legendary American Ballet Theater. As the film follows Copeland through her roller-coaster journey, one that features more than its share of downs to go with the many ups, Nelson George’s documentary pauses to consider the sources for and pernicious nature of the ballet world’s extremely thin, lily-white ideal. Nonetheless, this is a film of perseverance and triumph, which Copeland generously shares with the generations of supportive African American women who have come before her, and the scores of young girls who have found a role model, for the first time, who looks like them.
