Exhibition opens this Saturday at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art
OKLAHOMA CITY (November 9, 2023) – An immersive exhibition like no other opens this Saturday, November 11, at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA). Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight is organized by Museum of Glass, Tacoma, Washington and Preston Singletary and will be presented by The Chickasaw Nation.
The story of Raven, a creator figure in Tlingit (KLING-kit) culture who brought the world from darkness into light, has been passed down through oral tradition and has many different forms. Singletary (Tlingit) and curator Miranda Belarde-Lewis, PhD (Zuni/Tlingit) worked together, and with a group of Tlingit speakers, to combine five of these versions. The result is a story unique to this exhibition.
“Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight tells the story of Raven in multiple ways, not only through glass sculptures and text but also through a theatrical atmosphere,” said OKCMOA’s Curator of Exhibitions Jessica Provencher. “Just as Singletary and Belarde-Lewis worked together to develop the story of Raven as it’s told in this exhibition, Singletary also collaborated with the company zoe I juniper on projections and soundscapes that enhance the narrative by setting the stage and highlighting moments important to the story.”
The Tlingit are Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, primarily concentrated along the southeast coast of what we know today as Alaska. Visitors to Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight will take in a world of detail, color, and impressive scale as they make their way through the exhibition, guided by Raven. “Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight is remarkable in its art, its storytelling, and its installation,” said OKCMOA President and CEO Michael J. Anderson, PhD. “This is truly a multi-sensory exhibition that invites an appreciation of multiple forms of creation, and we’re excited to welcome our community to experience it.”
As part of OKCMOA’s continued initiative to increase accessibility in its galleries, Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight will feature QR codes with an audio component. When visitors scan a QR code, they will be brought to a landing page where they can hear a narration of the story as well as visual descriptions of the exhibition by section.
A variety of programming will complement the exhibition, including a book club, lectures, glass-blowing classes at Blue Sage Studios, and studio glass tours. These and other events are open to the public and are available at no cost or at discounted rates to Members. For more information on becoming a member, visit okcmoa.com/membership.
