Prints, sculpture, and photography will be on view in the coming year
OKLAHOMA CITY (June 13, 2024) – The Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA) today announced an exciting slate of exhibitions that will be on view in its galleries within the coming year.
Picasso and the Progressive Proof: Linocut Prints from a Private Collection will open on August 24 on the Museum’s second floor. The exhibition, organized by Townsend Art Advisory LLC, examines the printmaking output of legendary Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) in the last years of his life.
The exhibition highlights three prints and their various proofs—Portrait of a Young Woman after Cranach the Younger II, Pique II, and Bacchanal with Kid Goat and Onlooker—that illustrate Picasso’s unique printmaking process as well as his innovative contributions to the practice itself.
“Picasso and the Progressive Proof is an opportunity to showcase Picasso’s printmaking, which some people might not associate with the artist,” said Jessica Provencher, curator of exhibitions. “It also explores his interest in his Spanish heritage, mythology and the Classical past, and the work of European Old Masters, themes that dominated his long career.”
Opening the same day is a single-gallery installation featuring Auguste Rodin’s The Three Shades, on loan from a private collection. One of the masterworks of modern sculpture, The Three Shades was originally created as part of The Gates of Hell, an enormous set of bronze entrance doors commissioned in 1880 for a decorative arts museum to be built in Paris.
“Last summer we brought True Nature: Rodin and the Age of Impressionism to our community,” said President and CEO Michael Anderson, PhD. “Starting this August, we’ll have the incredible opportunity to present this iconic masterpiece and examine Rodin’s process in a new way.”
Opening in June of 2025, Discovering Ansel Adams will feature over 100 photographs that share Adams’s most celebrated works while revealing aspects of his development that are frequently overlooked. Along with rare archival materials, photographs in this large special exhibition span Adams’s entire career, from small, one-of-a-kind prints from his teenage years to a set of mural-sized prints showcasing some of his most famous views. Discovering Ansel Adams is organized by the Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, with the support of The Museum Box.
“We have an exciting season ahead at the Museum. With opportunities to see these incredible exhibitions, there’s never been a better time to become a member. Join now to experience not only Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer, which opens June 22, but also Picasso, Rodin, and Ansel Adams, all for free in the coming year,” said Director of Development Kimberley Worrell, CFRM.
Sponsorship opportunities for these exhibitions are also available, and those interested can contact Worrell at 405.278.8227.
