In September, Museum Films celebrates the boundless artistic potential of the musical genre with a rousing documentary about the history of Broadway and a trio of stylistically audacious new releases that breathe vibrant new life into the beloved Hollywood staple. From A Chorus Line to Hamilton, On Broadway celebrates the resilient spirit of New York’s Theater District with help from an all-star cast of stage and screen legends. A highlight of the Venice Film Festival, Ema reunites acclaimed Chilean director Pablo LarraÃn and Neruda star Gael GarcÃa Bernal for an electrifying family drama set in the world of contemporary dance. Co-written and starring Oscar-nominated actor Riz Ahmed, Mogul Mowgli tells the moving and deeply personal story of a British-Pakistani rapper’s struggle for survival. Tulsa-born musician St. Vincent teams up with Portlandia‘s Carrie Brownstein for The Nowhere Inn, a kaleidoscopic concert documentary that blurs the line between art and life.
Similarly concerned with the relationship between performance and reality, Isabella – screening in a special one night presentation – is a radiantly beautiful Shakespeare-inspired drama from Argentine writer-director MatÃas Piñeiro. From Exhibition on Screen (Frida Kahlo, Sunflowers) blockbuster art documentary Young Picasso goes behind the scenes at the Picasso museums in Malaga, Barcelona and Paris to uncover the origins of the artist’s singular style. In the final weekend of September, Museum Films welcomes back the Manhattan Short Film Festival for its 24th installment. As in previous years, film lovers from around the globe join forces to select the best film and best actor from a handpicked group of ten extraordinary finalists.
We hope to see you soon!
