Museum Films closes out 2021 with a dazzling celebration of all things cinematic. Our December lineup opens with the first installment of Joanna Hogg’s two-part autobiographical drama The Souvenir, featuring real-life mother and daughter Honor Swinton Byrne and Tilda Swinton. A luminous artistic coming-of-age tale set in 1980s London, The Souvenir follows film student Julie (Swinton Byrne) as she balances her artistic aspirations and her tempestuous relationship with the troubled but charismatic Anthony (Tom Burke). Fresh from it’s US premiere at the New York Film Festival, The Souvenir Part II sees life transformed into art as Julie draws on her experience with Anthony in her graduation film.
Another New York Film Festival highlight, What Do We See When We Look at the Sky? is an exuberantly inventive modern fairytale set in an idyllic, World Cup-obsessed village in the the former Soviet republic of Georgia. A swirling tale of mistaken identities and love at first sight, Aleksandre Koberidze’s sweeping magical realist romance is one of the most unique and invigorating theatrical experiences of 2021. The OKCMOA Film Society gathers in the Noble Theater at 7 pm on December 9 for the second event in our 35mm Thursdays film series, a big-screen celebration of international film classics as they were meant to be seen. This month, we salute the unmatched artistry of legendary Japanese director Yasujirō Ozu as we watch and discuss his late career masterpiece Late Autumn, projected on vibrant 35mm film.
No December lineup would be complete without our annual holiday film series. This year we’re excited to unwrap (Joy to the) World of Wong Kar Wai, a complete retrospective of feature films by the beloved Hong Kong writer-director. OKCMOA’s Noble Theater is the perfect place to leave behind the holiday rush and escape into a cinematic oasis of lush visuals, sensuous soundtracks and unforgettable characters.
As a reminder, OKCMOA Film Society members (including Friend, Fellows and Sustainers) receive $5 tickets to all Museum Films screenings, which is certainly something to celebrate. Happy Holidays and Best Wishes!
