Film Series: Blades & Ballet: King Hu and the Heroines of Wuxia
- Screening November 2-5, “Blades & Ballet: King Hu and the Heroines of Wuxia” is a curated film series focusing on the artistry and influence of the Taiwanese martial arts filmmaker King Hu. Hu is most esteemed as a groundbreaking master of 1960s and 1970s wuxia films featuring female leads. Typically set in pre-modern China, these stylized genre films blend lushly textured historical fantasy with gravity defying martial arts choreography. This series will feature newly restored versions of King Hu’s “Dragon Inn” (1967), “A Touch of Zen” (1971), “The Fate of Lee Khan” (1973), and “Raining in the Mountain” (1979). “Blades & Ballet” will also trace King Hu’s influence on the 21st century Taiwanese cinema with Tsai Ming-liang’s “Goodbye, Dragon Inn” – a poignant, minimalist homage to “Dragon Inn” and the communal experience of movie-going – and a pair of visually stunning, female fronted wuxia films from Hou Hsiao-hsien and Ang Lee. Winner of the best director at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, Hou Hsiao-hsien’s exquisite epic “The Assassin” will screen at a special opening-night Film Society event on Thursday, November 2. Starring Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Ang Lee’s 4-time Oscar-winning blockbuster “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” will be presented in a new 4k restoration. “Blades & Ballet” is sponsored by the Taiwan Academy in Houston, Taiwan Ministry of Culture, and Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute.
