This holiday season, visitors to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art can be inspired by radical art from Victorian England, visit an original sculpture exhibition opening Dec. 22, socialize at a Victorian-themed holiday party and watch the Arts Council Oklahoma City Opening Night fireworks from the Museum’s Roof Terrace.
“We are honored to be the first venue to host ‘Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts & Crafts Movement,'” said Dr. Michael J. Anderson, director of curatorial affairs. “There are just a few weeks left to see this incredible exhibition, drawn from the outstanding collection of the city Birmingham. Many of these works have never left England; this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Oklahomans.”
In addition to “Victorian Radicals,” visitors will enjoy a new sculpture exhibition curated almost exclusively from the Museum’s permanent collection opening Dec. 22. “Off the Wall: One Hundred Years of Sculpture” features twenty-three works of sculpture that range from the traditional to the highly unconventional. The exhibition illuminates a pivotal one-hundred-year period in which many ideas about sculpture, including its distinction from painting, were challenged.
Third Thursday: Victorian Yuletide is Dec. 20 from 5 to 9 p.m. and features Victorian traditions including card making, tree trimming and festive food and drinks. Guests will also have the opportunity to design a handmade wreath with Lin Sanchez of Su Casa in the Paseo Arts District during the Evergreen Wreath Making Workshop at 7 p.m., a separate ticketed event. Tickets to Third Thursdays are free for Museum members and $12 for non-members.
Opening during Victorian Yuletide and screening Dec. 20 to 30, Museum Films will present “Christmas Italian Style.” A fourteen-film odyssey through seven decades of Italian film history, “Christmas Italian Style” showcases the warmth, passion, and visual imagination one of the world’s most beloved national cinemas.
Following a special New Year’s Eve family-style menu in the Museum Cafe, the Roof Terrace will be open 11:30 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. to watch the Arts Council Oklahoma City Opening Night fireworks display. This ticketed event includes one glass of champagne. Reservations for dinner in the Museum Cafe can be made by calling (405) 235-6262 and include a ticket to the Roof Terrace event.
