Bronze
Auguste Rodin
French, 1840-1917
This group was originally designed for The Gates of Hell. Dante tells the story of his contemporaries Paolo and Francesca, a couple that he relegated to the second circle of hell where people who gave in to their lustful desires in life were condemned to be blown violently back and forth by strong winds preventing them from finding peace and rest. Paolo Malatesta was married but in love with his brother’s wife, Francesca da Polenta. The pair had a ten-year affair but were later discovered and murdered by Francesca’s husband. Rodin created the two figures separately, then brought them together to form the work.
