Edith Head: Hollywood’s Costume Designer

EDITH HEAD & OSCAR

The first Academy Award ceremony was held in 1929, but it was not until 1948 that Best Costume Design became a category. Edith Head and several other designers were instrumental in the campaign to get The Academy to recognize costume designers.

Initially, separate award categories were established for black-and-white films and color films, but they were combined into a single award beginning in 1967. Head was nominated for the color category for The Emperor Waltz in 1948 and was tremendously disappointed when she did not win. However, Head went on to work on hundreds of films during her career, garnering thirty-five Oscar nominations and eight wins, a record for both the Costume Design category and for women in any category.
