EDITH HEAD AT PARAMOUNT PICTURES
Although later admitting to “borrowing” art students’ sketches for her job interview portfolio, Edith Head was a fast learner and hard worker with an innate sense for costume design. Learning the ropes under Howard Greer and his successor Travis Banton, Head quickly transformed from sketch artist to full-time assistant to indispensable protégé.
In 1938, Head replaced Travis Banton as chief costume designer at Paramount—some believe she was instrumental in forcing his resignation—becoming the first woman to hold the position at a major film studio. She worked at Paramount for forty-three years before moving to Universal Pictures in 1967, where she worked until her death in 1981.
