The Archaeology Museum of Naples was founded in the 18th century by the Bourbon king Ferdinand IV to house his collection of ancient statuary. Over time, it also became the home of the vast findings of sculpture, painting, and mosaic from excavations of the lost towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Now the museum has one of the largest and richest archeological collections in the world and is a must-see for understanding the ancient history of the area around the Bay of Naples.
