Marginal Geographies: Independent Masterworks from China
Thursday, September 29 | 5:30 pm
Among the most distinctive independent comedies to come out of Mainland China (or anywhere else) this decade, Winter Vacation spends the end of winter break with a group of aimless teenagers and disaffected adults in a depressed corner of Inner Mongolia. In one absurdist, and very funny, exchange after another, the spectator is confronted by poet-novelist Li Hongqi’s remarkably bleak worldview—a perspective that touches everything in the film from an exceedingly disillusioned teenage romance to a child’s desire to be orphaned and escape the tyranny of family. Composed of extremely long takes that expertly serve the film’s uniquely black sense of humor, Winter Vacation was awarded the Golden Leopard (top prize) in 2010 at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival.
