It’s December 1945 in Warsaw, Poland, and World War II finally has come to a close. French Red Cross doctor Mathilde (Lou de Laâge, Breathe) is among those treating the last French survivors of the Nazi camps. It is within this environment that Mathilde meets a hysterical Benedictine nun, who pleads for her help. Agreeing to accompany her back to her convent, the non-believer comes to discover a shocking secret inside the cloistered community. Directed by Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Channel, Gemma Bovery), The Innocents “leaves us with a fresh understanding of our capacity to respond to suffering with good or evil,” in the words of Variety’s Justin Chang, “and to find new definitions of grace and vocation.” Already a sleeper hit, The Innocents is very much this year’s Ida.
