Guests can create art, watch French films, participate in unique family workshops, listen to a free audio guide and more during the special exhibition, “Matisse in His Time,” opening June 18 at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA). All summer long, OKCMOA’s Saturday Drop-in Art programming will be inspired by works of art featured in “Matisse in His Time,” as will many of the regularly scheduled films, classes, camps and workshops.
“We are expecting this exhibition to be one of our largest ever, and we have designed our programming and learning opportunities to accommodate all ages and backgrounds,” said Tracy Truels, director of learning and engagement. “We encourage everyone to attend this historic exhibition regardless of their knowledge of Matisse. We will have plenty of opportunities for visitors to learn more about this incredible artist and his impact on the history of art.”
An audio guide will be available free to access on any smartphone and will include 12 stops throughout the exhibition. The guide can be accessed anytime starting June 15 via guide.okcmoa.com. Headphones are required for the audio guide, and guests are encouraged to bring their own. Headphones will also be available for purchase for $2 at the Museum.
Workshops such as “Picasso Face Sculptures” and “Painting with Paper” will involve both gallery and classroom activities and will be a unique way for families to experience the exhibition. While some classes and workshops include an additional fee, Drop-in Art, come-and-go art making for all ages, is free with admission and occurs every Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
Museum Films will screen French films throughout the summer including “Dheepan” by Jacques Audiard, the winner of the Palme d’Or (the top prize) at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and a new 4K digital restoration of Jean Cocteau’s 1946 version of “Beauty and the Beast.” Additionally, Museum Films will present a special series, “Impressionism multiplied by the cinema: The Films of Jean Renoir,” which includes five films by director Jean Renoir, son of painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who is featured in “Matisse in His Time.” Among the Renoir films featured are two on 35mm film: “1939’s “The Rules of the Game,” which was voted one of the five greatest films of all-time in the most recent, authoritative “Sight & Sound Magazine” poll; and 1956’s “Elena and Her Men,” which stars Ingrid Bergman.
Museum Film’s annual French Film Week will feature five new French films, including two more major Cannes prize-winners; tentative titles include: “Les Cowboys,” “My King,” “The Measure of a Man,” “Diary of a Chambermaid” and “Marguerite.”
“Matisse in His Time” will include 100 works of art, including more than 50 paintings, sculptures and works on paper by Henri Matisse, as well as masterworks by his contemporaries – Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Georges Braque, André Derain, Fernand Léger and Amedeo Modigliani. The exhibition will be on view from June 18 through Sept. 18, 2016. Tickets are available at okcmoa.com/matisse.

The exhibition is made possible by a grant from Inasmuch Foundation in honor of its founder, Edith Kinney Gaylord. Gaylord created the Oklahoma City-based foundation in 1982 and would have celebrated her 100th birthday on March 5, 2016. In addition to the fine arts, Inasmuch Foundation supports education, health and human services and community enhancement initiatives that enrich the quality of life for Oklahomans.
