A twenty-first-century Pilgrim’s Progress set within the hedonistic world of contemporary Hollywood, Knight of Cups stars Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, The Big Short) as the searching “pilgrim” Rick. Bale’s character is a Hollywood screenwriter who cycles through one relationship after another—Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett play two of his lovers—as he fails to find spiritual meaning in any of life’s encounters. Directed by Bartlesville, Oklahoma-native Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life), one of modern American cinema’s most distinctive voices, the highly fragmented and startlingly impressionistic Knight of Cups possesses the same dreamlike spirit as its literary source, and films such as David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive and the director’s own latter-day cult classic, The New World. With cinematography from The Revenant’s Emmanuel Lubezki, Malick’s latest is one of the most ambitious and experimental Hollywood movies in ages.
