Whether she is volunteering at a local soup kitchen, visiting friends and family at the hospital or trying desperately to save her drug-addicted son (Jake Lacy), Diane (Mary Kay Place) constantly puts everyone else’s needs before her own. Yet, despite all her selflessness, Diane cannot escape her demons—especially after her son undergoes a major life change. Director and critic Kent Jones (Hitchcock/Truffaut) infuses his debut fiction feature with a genuine humanity, but ultimately Diane is dominated by the extraordinary emotional range that Emmy-winner Mary Kay Place brings to her amazing performance. If Place’s face was unfamiliar to many before this Tribeca premiere, everyone will know the Oklahoma-native’s name after witnessing her star-making turn in this consummate example of American melodrama.
