It’s Paris, 1941. All of the world’s leading scientists have disappeared, and technological progress has been halted. It is within this dystopian and quintessentially Steampunk universe that April and the Extraordinary World, winner of Best Animated Feature at the prestigious 2015 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, is set. Christian Desmares and Franck Ekinci’s feature tells the story of April Franklin (Marion Cotillard, in the French-language original), a young woman searching for answers. Ten years after her parents’ disappearance, she lives alone with her talking cat, Darwin, as she continues their scientific research. However, trying to avenge her family proves no easy task as April encounters government agents, selfish teenage boys, and science experiments gone wrong. The film, which is adapted from a graphic novel by French comic artist Jacques Tardi, is “a beautiful, inventive, and uncannily satisfying new example of animated sci-fi,” according to The New York Times’s Glenn Kenny.
